Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
If there are some countries that you can not undertake your studies without a
perfect health insurance through out your duration, Australia is one of them. And
you must get this before entering Australia as part of your visa requirement. As
an international student coming to Australia this is a compulsory requirement
you must meet in order to get your visa approved by the Department of home affairs. Medical expenses are really expensive in Australia .OSHC requirement is
essential in order to be able to meet up with your medical expenses while living
in Australia as a student.
When do you get this? Usually as soon as your admission has been approved, before
sending your admission letters and other documents, your institution will let you
know of this requirement. They will guide you on how to pay for one if
necessary. So you might either pay for one directly yourself via one of the
approved providers listed below or organised with your institution to make some
arrangements for you. In some cases, through the institution it can be more
cheaper.
However, if you are a self sponsored student, that's when you might get some
little worries about all the little steps to follow in order to get your
cover. The good news is ,it's pretty easy as it seems. On the other hand, for most
scholarship students, if your scholarship covers your OSHC, then you do not
have to worry, the institution generally will make an arrangement for you while
processing your admission documents. All international students in Australia must
get an Overseas Student Health Cover except students from Norway, Belgium, Sweden
as they have been covered by other Insurance schemes by their nations or cover
under reciprocal health care with Australian.
