ANU University Research Scholarships 2025-2026

The ANU University Research Scholarships are prestigious awards provided by the Australian National University to support outstanding domestic and international students undertaking Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs. These scholarships align with ANU’s strategic research priorities and are aimed at developing research excellence through a highly competitive merit-based selection process.

This opportunity is open to both new and currently enrolled HDR students, offering generous financial support, academic flexibility, and additional benefits for research success at one of Australia's leading research universities

Scholarship Overview

Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover and living stipend

  • Stipend value: $38,154 per annum (2024 rate)
  • Payment mode: Paid fortnightly
  • Other supports:

    • Travel and relocation allowance for students relocating to Canberra
    • Thesis allowance
    • Dependent Child Allowance (for international students only)

Paid medical, maternity, and parental leave
  • Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research (HDR Programs)
  • Study Course: Open to all study areas
  • Citizen type: Domestic and International students
  • Number of positions: Not specified (competitive across rounds)
  • Duration: 3.5 years (with possible 6-month extension)
  • Deadline:
    • Round 1 (International): 31 August (commence by March of the following year)
    • Round 1 (Domestic): 31 October (commence by March of the following year)
    • Round 2 (All): 15 April (commence by August of the same year)

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled or applying for an accredited HDR program (Masters by Research or PhD) at the Australian National University

  • Be a domestic or international student

  • Have achieved a minimum of Honours (H1) or equivalent academic achievement

  • Not be an Industry PhD Candidate receiving a full-time salary

Eligible Countries: All nationalities
Eligible Programs: All accredited Higher Degree Research programs at ANU

Selection Criteria 

Selection is competitive and based on academic merit and potential. Each ANU College convenes a selection committee to rank eligible candidates according to:

  • Previous academic record and GPA

  • Research potential and alignment with ANU strategic directions

  • Referee reports

  • English language competency

  • Proposed research location and supervisor support

  • Comparative merit with other applicants in the same scholarship round

How to Apply

  • New Applicants: Simply apply for admission to an ANU HDR program. During the application, indicate your interest in being considered for scholarships including the ANU University Research Scholarship.

  • Current HDR Candidates (less than 1 year full-time equivalent): Submit the "Request for a current ANU student to be considered for a HDR scholarship" form.

There is no separate application form for this scholarship for prospective students your admission application serves as your scholarship application
