La Trobe Flexible Research Scholarship (FLEX) 2025
The La Trobe Flexible Research Scholarship (FLEX) is a unique opportunity offered by La Trobe University to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in research education. This scholarship is designed specifically for graduate researchers with disabilities who currently hold, or have been offered, a Research Training Program (RTP) stipend or a La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS) stipend.
The program provides additional financial and structural support, allowing candidates extra time, flexibility, and funding to complete their research degrees successfully. It recognizes the diverse challenges faced by students with disabilities and ensures that their research journey is supported through tailored adjustments and resources.
Scholarship Overview
- Scholarship Type: Extension to RTP or LTGRS Stipend
- Stipend Value: $36,000 per annum (paid fortnightly; indexed annually)
- Additional Support:
- Research support allowance of up to $3,000 per annum for disability-related research costs (e.g., Auslan interpreters, personal care support during conferences).
- Extended candidature: Up to 12 additional months (FTE) for doctoral candidates and 6 additional months (FTE) for Masters by Research candidates (subject to visa conditions and approvals).
- Extended stipend: Up to 18 months (FTE) for doctoral candidates and 8 months (FTE) for Masters by Research candidates.
- Tuition fee scholarship covering the extended candidature period.
- Up to 24 months of aggregated leave of absence (subject to visa conditions).
- Study Level: Masters by Research / Doctoral (PhD)
- Study Area: Open to all research disciplines
- Citizen Type: Australian Citizens, Permanent Residents, New Zealand Citizens, and International Students
- Available Campuses: Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Melbourne, Mildura, and Shepparton

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the FLEX scholarship, applicants must:

Currently receive a Research Training Program (RTP) stipend or a La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS) stipend, or have accepted an offer for either.

Have a disability attributable to one or more intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairments, or to a psychiatric condition that is:

Permanent or likely to be permanent; and
-
Results in substantially reduced functional capacity in one or more key activities such as communication, learning, mobility, self-care, or self-management.

Provide medical evidence or proof of participation in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to demonstrate the impact of the disability on study pace and functional capacity.
Selection Criteria
Selection will prioritize applicants who:

Will be conducting their research at a La Trobe University campus.

For Doctoral candidates: Have completed a Masters by Research or a significant research contribution (e.g., lead authorship of a thesis or peer-reviewed publication) assessed at a standard of 70 or above.

For Masters by Research candidates: Hold an Honours 2A or equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
Assessment will consider:

Academic merit and research potential.

The impact of the candidate’s disability on study pace and research engagement.

The quality and completeness of supporting documentation.
