ACU Refugee Scholarship 2025–2026

The ACU Refugee Scholarship is an equity-based opportunity established by the Australian Catholic University to support refugee and asylum seeker students who face significant barriers in accessing higher education. The scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver and additional support to help students begin and complete an undergraduate program at ACU.

This scholarship is open to future or commencing international students on specific humanitarian or protection visas, including those seeking asylum. Scholarship Overview

Scholarship type: Equity (full fee waiver)

Value includes:

  • Full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the recipient’s ACU undergraduate degree, diploma, or foundation studies program.

  • Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) waiver for the duration of the scholarship.

Other supports:

  • Ongoing support in collaboration with the community organisation or education partner supporting the applicant.

Study Level: Undergraduate / Diploma / Foundation Studies

Study Course: Open to all ACU undergraduate-level programs

Citizen type: Students on eligible humanitarian or protection visas

Number of positions: Not specified (competitive selection based on merit and need)

Duration: Duration of the recipient’s program (subject to ongoing requirements)

Application Dates:

  • Open Date: 1 October 2025

  • Close Date: 11 January 2026

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible, applicants must meet all the following:

Visa / Citizenship Requirements: Must hold one of:

  • Temporary Humanitarian Stay visa (Subclass 449)

  • Temporary Protection visa (Subclass 785)

  • Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa (Subclass 786)

  • Safe Haven Enterprise visa (Subclass 790)

  • A bridging visa with an application for Permanent Protection Visa (Subclass 866)

Support Requirement:

  • Must be supported by a community organisation or education partner willing to provide a written reference and assist the student throughout their studies.

Course Requirement:

  • Must apply for or have received an offer to begin an ACU undergraduate degree, diploma, or foundation studies program for Semester 1, 2026.

Study Load:

  • Full-time enrolment (special circumstances exemptions may apply)

Nationality:

  • International students only.

Selection Criteria 

Applicants will be assessed based on:

  • The strength and clarity of their written statement (approx. 200 words) explaining:

    • Why they want to study at ACU

    • How the scholarship will support them financially

  • The letter of recommendation from their supporting community organisation or education partner

  • Up to two additional personal or character references (optional)

  • Interview performance (if required)

  • Preference may be given to recent senior high school graduates

Selection Process

  • Applications are reviewed and shortlisted by the ACU Scholarships Office.

  • Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview.

  • Final selections are made by ACU Global Engagement.

Ongoing Requirements

To retain the scholarship each semester, recipients must:

  • Achieve at least a pass grade in 50% of attempted credit points

  • Maintain full-time enrolment

  • Remain enrolled in the same ACU course for which the scholarship was awarded

  • Continue to hold an eligible humanitarian or protection visa (cannot become a permanent resident or citizen of Australia or New Zealand)

Note: Exceptional circumstances may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

How to Apply 

Applicants must submit the following documents during the application:

  1. A written statement (approx. 200 words) addressing:

    • Motivation for studying at ACU

    • How the scholarship will assist financially

  2. A letter of recommendation from a community organisation or education partner.

    • Up to two additional character/personal references may also be included.

  3. Certified copies of:

    • Passport

    • Visa

    • Immicard (if applicable)

  4. Details of most recently completed education

  5. A copy of ACU course offer letter

Applications must be submitted as an international student via ACU or a Tertiary Admissions Centre (TAC) for Year 12 students.
