Senior Indigenous Research Scholarships 2024-2025
This scholarship opportunity is being sponsored by the University of Tasmania to support outstanding Indigenous students in Australia to pursue higher degrees by research (Masters/PhD) at the University of Tasmania. This initiative is aimed at fostering significant contributions to Indigenous knowledge and community development.
The opportunity is open to domestic Indigenous students to undertake research projects that benefit Aboriginal communities and contribute to the body of knowledge in areas critical to Aboriginal well-being and development. See some application tips at the end of the post!
Scholarship Overview
Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover
Stipend value: Living allowance of over $50,000 per year pro-rata.
Other supports: Tailored supervision by experienced Aboriginal researchers, skill-development workshops, and opportunities to work on research topics that matter to Aboriginal communities.
Health insurance:Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research
Study Course: Open to research topics such as Aboriginal biographies, histories, health, law, social or economic development, land, sea, and cultural resource management.
Citizen type: Domestic Indigenous students
Number of positions: Not specified.
Duration: Up to 2 years for Masters by Research degree and up to 3.5 years for a PhD

Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants are expected to:
- Enrollment: Be eligible to enroll full-time in a Masters or Doctoral degree at the University of Tasmania in 2024.
- No Equivalent Funding: Not be receiving another award, scholarship, or salary that’s equivalent to more than 75% of this stipend.
- Educational Background: For PhD applicants, you need at least four years of tertiary education, with an upper second class Honours degree or equivalent qualifications/relevant experience. For MRes applicants, a lower second class Honours degree or equivalent qualifications/relevant experience is required.
- Community Engagement: Have a track record of leadership or significant contributions to Aboriginal community development.
- Aboriginality: Meet the Australian Government’s definition of Aboriginality and complete the declaration of Aboriginality.
Eligible Countries: Only Australian Indigenous students are eligible for this scholarship.
Eligible course or study program: Any research topic aligned with the needs and priorities of Aboriginal communities.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria for this scholarship will be merit-based and consider the following:
- Achievements from your previous study program: Academic scores, ranks, etc.
- Research potentials in your interested field of study: Demonstrated through publications, presentations, etc.
- Relevance of your chosen program to Aboriginal communities: The direct impact and relevance of your research topic to Indigenous needs.
- Relevant professional experiences: Experiences that contribute to your research capabilities.
- Community engagement: Your past contributions to Aboriginal community development and leadership roles.
- Recommendations: Strong endorsements from referees.

Formulate Your Research Topic: Develop a research project that resonates with the needs of Aboriginal communities. Ensure it’s aligned with a relevant discipline and achievable within the program’s timeframe.
Seek Guidance: Reach out to the HDR Support Person from the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Aboriginal Leadership or an academic mentor for advice as you shape your project.
Submit Your Expression of Interest: This is your first step. Once approved, you’ll move on to the full application.
Craft Your Research Proposal: Prepare a two-page document outlining the importance of your project, how you’ll undertake it, and what you hope to achieve.
