University of Wollongong Australia Women in STEM Scholarships

The University of Wollongong’s LIFT Internship Scholarship is a targeted initiative to promote female representation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This scholarship supports both domestic and international female Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates by providing financial assistance, real-world industry experience, and leadership training. Through a three to six-month internship and additional professional development, the LIFT program enables women to apply their academic skills to industry challenges, enhance their leadership potential, and bring innovative ideas to life.

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship type: Financial support with an industry internship
  • Internship stipend: $9,000 for a three-month internship, with $18,000 available for a six-month option
  • Additional grant: $1,000 for the research group
  • Professional development: $10,000 in leadership, entrepreneurship training, and networking events
  • Other support: Access to UOW’s iAccelerate program for additional mentorship, networking, and innovation development
  • Study level: Higher Degree Research (HDR) in STEM fields
  • Citizen type: Open to both domestic and international students
  • Deadline:Open year round

Eligibility Criteria 

Eligible candidates must:

  • Be female HDR students at UOW, enrolled in a STEM-related program, such as Engineering, Biological Sciences, Information Technology, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Have a willingness to commit to a minimum 12-week industry internship, engaging for at least four days per week.
  • Be open to participating in leadership and entrepreneurship training as part of the program.
  • Special encouragement is extended to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Selection Criteria

Selection is merit-based, focusing on:

  • Academic achievements and research potential
  • Willingness to engage in community and leadership development
  • Relevance of the candidate’s STEM focus to their chosen industry field
  • Potential to contribute to gender diversity in STEM fields through community engagement and industry impact

How to Apply

To apply, candidates should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Lift-project@uow.edu.au. The EOI should contain:

  • A description (maximum two pages) of the candidate’s research
  • Details of any industry partner (if applicable) or ideas for collaboration
  • A statement of how this scholarship would support the candidate’s academic and professional goals

UOW is prepared to assist candidates without a specific partner by matching them with a suitable industry collaborator.
