The Australian National University (ANU) Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship is a prestigious opportunity funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training. It is designed to support outstanding domestic and international students pursuing a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at ANU. The scholarship covers full tuition costs and provides financial support to assist with living expenses, research, and dependent child care.

ANU conducts two central scholarship rounds annually, including the RTP Scholarship, the University Research Scholarship, and other centrally managed scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on a competitive ranking process, ensuring that top-ranked candidates receive support, subject to confirmation of a qualified supervisor, space, and resources in alignment with ANU's research strategy.

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship Type: Full tuition fee cover
  • Stipend Value: Living allowance of $39,069 per year
  • Other Supports:

      • Relocation allowance for students moving to Canberra
    • Thesis allowance
    • Dependent child allowance (for international students only)
    • Paid medical, maternity, and parental leave
    • Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research
  • Study Course: Open to all study areas
  • Citizen Type: Domestic and International students
  • Duration:
    • Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research degree
    • Up to 3 years for a PhD, with a six-month extension possibility and another six-month extension under specific

  • Be applying for a Higher Research Degree (HDR) Master’s or PhD program at ANU

  • Research potential and alignment with ANU's research strategy

  • Relevance of the chosen research program to the applicant’s previous studies

  • Strong recommendations from academic referees
