University of Sydney International Research Training Program Scholarship (IRTP) 2026
The International Research Training Program Scholarship (IRTP) is a prestigious scholarship funded by the Australian Government, Department of Education and Training. It aims to support highly ranked international students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research potential to undertake a Higher Degree by Research (Masters by Research or PhD) in Australia.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, living allowance, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the student and eligible dependents, making it a fully funded opportunity for research students wishing to study in Australia.
The IRTP is available to newly commencing research students at the University and is awarded on a competitive basis.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the IRTP, applicants must:

Be undertaking a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) as an overseas student (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003) at the University in the year of the IRTP Stipend.

Have received an offer and accepted enrolment into a postgraduate research program at the University.

Not be receiving an equivalent award, stipend, or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the IRTP Scholarship stipend rate to undertake the HDR. (Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study is not subject to the 75% rule.)

Not receive an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR fees.

Submit a complete application, including all supporting documentation, before the application deadline.
Selection Criteria
Scholarship recipients are selected on a competitive basis against the University’s selection criteria. Assessment will typically consider:

Academic excellence in previous qualifications (transcripts, GPA, class rank)

Research potential in the chosen field

Relevance of the proposed research project to previous academic background

Relevant professional and/or research experience
-
Referee recommendations
-
Demonstrated research skills through publications, presentations, or previous project work
How to Apply
There is no separate application form for the IRTP scholarship.

Complete the online application for admission to a Higher Degree by Research program by the scholarship deadline.

In the SCHOLARSHIP/SPONSORSHIP INFORMATION section of the application, tick “YES” to be considered for scholarships.

Submit all required supporting documentation before the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
