Destination Australia Scholarships-International student scholarship 

The Destination Australia scholarship is a program funded by the Australian Government's Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The aim of this program is to attract and support both domestic and international students to study in regional Australia and provide them with a high-quality learning experience. It's important to note that this scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries, and Grants Policy.

  • Student Type : New Students commencing in 2024
  • Value:$15,000 per year
  • Campus: Cairns, Mackay, Mt Isa or Townsville
  • Applications Open:12 December 2023
  • Applications Close:11 January 2024 5pm

International students applying for the following courses in 2024 may be eligible:

Scholarship Eligibility:

Destination Australia Scholarships for International Students are available to students who:
- are studying on a valid student visa.
- are commencing a course listed in the table above in 2024.
- are studying full-time, face-to-face at one of the campuses listed in the table above.

Scholarship Value:

The scholarship is worth $15,000 per year for the duration of the course. Scholarship payments will be made in two installments within six weeks after the census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2.

How to Apply for this Scholarship:

You must submit an application on the official online form before the advertised deadline. Please include the following:
- A written statement of no more than 600 words outlining:
    - Why you have chosen to study at JCU and in a regional community; 
    - How you plan to contribute to the local community during your studies at JCU and contribute to the skills shortage in regional Australia upon graduation; and 
    - Why JCU should select you to receive the Destination Australia Scholarship. Please include examples and attach evidence of how you have contributed to your local community.

It is important to ensure that you include all relevant documents (including a completed application form) and that your application is submitted before the closing date. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What Happens Next:

Your application will be assessed for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation of its receipt. After the closing date, your application will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee that will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview or submit a video submission as part of the selection process.

Selection Criteria:

Applicants will be assessed based on:
- Eligibility under the program guidelines (Section 5.1.1).
- Response to Written Submission questions.
- Academic merit (applicable for Master's applicants only).
- Any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.

Ongoing Eligibility:

To maintain the scholarship, the recipient must:
- Maintain full-time, face-to-face enrollment in the course for which the scholarship was awarded.
- Maintain a course GPA of 4.0 or above for ongoing payments to be made.
If the recipient fails to meet this requirement of ongoing eligibility, evidence of special circumstances contributing to the reduced GPA must be provided to the Selection Committee for consideration.

Conditions of the Scholarship:

- If the recipient defers their study, they will no longer be eligible for the award.
- If the holder of an award takes an official leave of absence, the award will be terminated.
- The scholarship is not transferable to another campus or course of study.
- A student may request a review of the decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.
