How to apply for admissions & scholarships to study in Australia: Undergraduate & Postgraduate coursework applicant guide
How to apply for undergraduate, and postgraduate coursework programs and secure a scholarship to study in Australia
Applying for undergraduate or postgraduate programs and scholarships to study in Australia is a much easier process than applying for research degree programs and scholarships. Research degree scholarships and admissions entry requirements are more complex and very competitive.
The application process for an undergraduate or postgraduate work degree program is not that complex as these are not both research degrees.
In general, the whole application process can be done online (you can equally download the forms) or via approved University agents in your home country. This is however limited by geographic location. Some countries can only apply via agents. This information is all found on the University websites, including the registered or approved agents.
Generally, to apply for both admissions and scholarships, you will have to apply for admissions first, then indicate the scholarships you are interested in in the same application form. In other cases, admissions and scholarship application is made separately. Whatever the case, all the information will be available at your disposal at the time of applying.
A) Applying for Undergraduate programs and available scholarships step by step
The whole process is easy and straightforward. The secret lies in meeting the entry requirements for your preferred course or degree program. Academic entry requirements vary per degree program. Some Universities equally have some Country-specific Entry Requirements. Below are some standard entry requirements for international students to study in Australia. It's also worth noting that some majors have certain prerequisites which must be met before you can receive an offer:
- An outstanding academic performance. ie good performance from your previous studies.(outstanding grades or GPA..) whatever system your country is using
- A good understanding and general knowledge of your area of study
- Extra-curricular activities. This could come from cultural activities, volunteer or any work experience
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- English language proficiency. This condition can be met by undertaking an English language proficiency test(IELTS for example). The least score you should have for admissions should be 6.5 overall for Ielts in most universities or courses with no band lower than 6.0. Note that some courses might demand even higher scores. However, some universities equally have pathway English courses for students who have been offered a place but failed to meet this requirement
- An outstanding recommendation letter.
You can read more about standard requirements for Undergraduate programs and scholarships to study in Australia.
If you meet the entry requirements, you can just go ahead and apply as follows:
Step 1. Gather your documents
Check to see that you meet the entry requirements for your chosen course and the application documentation requirements. Indicate any scholarship you are interested in. This can be done on the same application form usually.
Step 2. Submit your application
Applications can be done online via the University application portal. However, you can equally submit a paper application by downloading the PDF forms, completing and send back directly to the university via their official email or by post.
You can equally apply directly via an approved University agent in your home country. Australia Universities have authorised or approved agents for different countries found on the University Website. Visit the website, browse through the list of agents and locate that of your country. Contact and request assistance.
Step 3. Application Assessment
Upon receiving your application, this will be assessed based on academic and English entry requirements. You will be advised of any additional documentation required.
Step 4. Application outcome: Offer/scholarships
This is the final stage. If your application is successful, you will receive your offer by email. Any further information and next steps will be provided to you at this stage.
B) Applying for Postgraduate Course Programs and available scholarships step by step
As I explained, the application process for the postgraduate course is the same as that of the undergraduate. Once you meet the entry requirements for your chosen course, then you are all good to go. See the standard requirements for postgraduate coursework and scholarships and apply by following the same steps as above.
Summary: Applying for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the secret lies in meeting the entry requirements for your preferred course or degree program. Academic entry requirements vary per degree program. The general application process is summarised as follows:
