About the positions

RMIT University Urban Futures PhD Scholarship

The Urban Futures PhD Scholarship is offered by the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University. The scholarship supports research in various urban studies topics under the guidance of Professor Jago Dodson, the Director of Urban Futures EIP. This is an opportunity for both domestic and international students to pursue a PhD focused on current urban challenges. The scholarship is awarded through RMIT’s competitive research scholarship rounds and is open to the most qualified applicants based on academic excellence and research potential.

Potential research topics include:

• National-level urban policies
• Public transport network planning and governance
• Housing systems and policies
• Urban political economy and class dynamics
• Urban crisis theories
• Urban policy and infrastructure
• Global-scale urban governance
• Post-war reconstruction for Ukraine and/or Gaza

Scholarship Overview

• Scholarship type: Full tuition fee coverage 
• Stipend value: Living allowance of $35,886 per annum (2025 rate, indexed annually).
• Relocation support: Up to $515 per adult and $255 per child (maximum $1,540).
• Health insurance: OSHC for international students.
• Paid leave: Maternity, sick, and parenting leave as per RMIT scholarship terms and conditions.
• Study level: PhD by Research.
• Study course: Urban Studies and related fields.
• Citizen type: Open to international and domestic students.
• Number of positions: Not specified.
• Duration: 3.5 years full-time for PhD; 2 years full-time for Master’s.

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Undertake an internship with an industry, government, or civil society partner.
• Have achieved a High Distinction (80% or higher) in the final two years of their qualifying program or demonstrate equivalent academic achievement through work experience, publications, or research experience.
• Be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at an RMIT Australian campus.
• For international applicants, meet English language requirements by the application closing date.
• Applicants who have already completed a graduate research degree at the same level (e.g., PhD applicants who already hold a PhD) are not eligible.

Selection Criteria 

Selection is based on the following merit-based criteria:

• Academic performance: High distinction or equivalent qualifications.
• Research potential: Publications, work experience, or contributions to the field.
• Relevance: Alignment between previous studies and the proposed research program.
• Professional experience: Prior work or internships relevant to urban research.
