RMIT Research Stipend Scholarships (RSS & RRSS) 2025
The RMIT Research Stipend Scholarships (RSS & RRSS) offer an exciting opportunity for both domestic and international students to pursue postgraduate research in one of Australia’s leading universities. These scholarships are designed to support students with outstanding academic records, research potential, and relevant professional experience.
RMIT offers two main types of research stipend scholarships:

RTP Stipend Scholarship (RSS) – funded by the Australian Government
-
RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship (RRSS) – funded by RMIT University
All applicants for a research scholarship are automatically considered for both options. If you're passionate about conducting high-impact research in a vibrant, global environment, this scholarship offers a competitive platform to support your academic journey.
Scholarship Overview

Scholarship type: Full Tuition Fee Offset (for eligible local and international students)

Stipend value: $35,886 per annum pro rata (indexed annually)

Other supports:

Relocation allowance: Up to $515 per adult and $255 per child, max $1,540

Paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave (within policy limits)

Health insurance: International students receive either:

RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or

RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS)

Masters: 2 years full-time

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

Meet the entry requirements for a research program at RMIT
-
Have an academic supervisor willing to support your research
-
Not already hold a qualification equivalent to the one they are applying for
-
Not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded research scholarship unless terminated within six months
-
Not currently be receiving another award, scholarship or research salary exceeding 75% of the annual stipend
-
Meet English language requirements (for international applicants)
-
Be able to commit to at least 12 months full-time study
Additional eligibility conditions include:

Local applicants may apply part-time under exceptional circumstances (note: part-time stipends are not tax exempt)
-
Must have sufficient candidature time remaining (PhD – at least 24 months; Masters – 12 months)
Selection Criteria
Scholarships will be awarded through a competitive and merit-based selection process based on:

Academic excellence – priority is given to applicants with high distinction (80%+) in the final two years
-
Research outputs (such as publications)
-
Relevant work experience and professional achievements
-
Strength of academic recommendations
-
Quality and alignment of the proposed research topic

Prior research experience or training

How to Apply

Secure a Supervisor: First, identify and contact an academic staff member at RMIT who agrees to supervise your research.

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI): EOI must include supervisor confirmation.

Complete the Online Application: Once invited, complete your formal scholarship application through RMIT’s portal.

Include All Required Documents: Academic transcripts, research proposal, CV, supervisor support, etc.
