University of Sydney Faculty of Engineering Research Scholarship 2025

The University of Sydney, through its Faculty of Engineering, is offering this scholarship opportunity to support outstanding higher degree research students pursuing innovative and impactful studies in engineering.

This prestigious award aims to encourage both domestic and international students to undertake a Master’s by Research or PhD program in the Faculty of Engineering, contributing to world-class research that addresses real-world challenges.

The scholarship is open to high-achieving students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong research potential, and a commitment to advancing engineering knowledge.

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover + stipend support
  • Stipend value: Equivalent to the University of Sydney’s Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate (indexed annually on 1 January) – currently $37,000 per annum (2025 rate, pro-rata).
  • Other supports: Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) provided for successful international recipients.
  • Study Level: Master’s by Research / PhD
  • Study Course: Open to all research areas within the Faculty of Engineering
  • Citizen type: Domestic and International students
  • Number of positions: Subject to funding availability (Faculty or external funding sources)
  • Duration:
    • Up to 1 year for a Master’s by Research (no extension possible)
    • Up to 3.5 years for a PhD (no extension possible)
    • Academic course fees and SSAF covered for up to 4 research periods (Master’s) or 14 research periods (PhD)
  • Deadline: Ongoing (subject to admission rounds and funding availability)

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time enrolment in a PhD program OR

  • Have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time enrolment in a Master’s by Research program with the intent to transfer to PhD after satisfactory completion of the first annual progress evaluation within the Faculty of Engineering

  • Withdraw any concurrent applications for the University of Sydney Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships, including RTP Stipend or RTP Tuition Fee Offset (for international students).

Selection Criteria 

The selection process will be merit-based and considers the following factors:

  • Academic achievements in previous studies (GPA, class rank, distinctions, etc.)

  • Demonstrated research potential and proposed project relevance

  • Strong alignment of chosen research area with the Faculty of Engineering’s priorities

  • Previous research experience, publications, or industry involvement

  • Recommendations and academic references from prior institutions or supervisors

How to Apply

  • Engineering HDR students applying for admission will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

  • No separate application is required.

  • Applicants are advised to prepare a strong research proposal, secure academic referees, and highlight relevant publications or industry experience
