Western Sydney University Research Scholarships (Q1 2026 Commencement)

Western Sydney University is offering a new round of Research Scholarships to support outstanding domestic candidates pursuing higher degrees by research in Australia. These scholarships provide financial assistance and research support to students enrolling in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Professional Doctorate programs (DCA, DCR or EdD) at one of Australia’s leading research institutions.

The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who demonstrate academic excellence and research potential. This scholarship round is specifically for candidates commencing in Quarter 1, 2026, and applications will be assessed according to the university’s ranking guidelines.

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship Type: Domestic research scholarship

  • Stipend Value: AUD $35,188 per annum (tax-free), for up to 3 years

  • Tuition Fees: Covered by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) for the duration of the scholarship

  • Other Supports:

    • Funded place in a research degree for domestic students

  • Excluded: Travel costs, visa costs, relocation expenses, health insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses are not covered.

  • Study Level: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Professional Doctorate (DCA, DCR, EdD)

  • Study Course: Open to eligible research fields under the approved programs

  • Citizen Type: Domestic applicants only

  • Number of Positions: Not specified (competitive round)

  • Duration: Up to 3 years full-time

  • Commencement: Monday 5 January 2026 (Quarter 1, 2026)

  • Deadline: Friday 31 October 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be domestic applicants who can be onshore in Australia at the scholarship commencement date.

  • Be applying to commence a new PhD or Professional Doctorate program or have commenced a PhD program in 2025.

  • Have completed a Masters-level or Honours-level degree at Western Sydney University in 2024 or 2025.

  • Be able to commence their program on the specified date (5 January 2026).

Selection Criteria 

Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis by a ranking panel. The selection will be based on:

  • Academic excellence, particularly in prior Honours or Masters studies.

  • Research potential, demonstrated through prior coursework, publications, or research experience.

  • Quality of supervisory support — applicants must provide a letter of support from a suitable supervisor for their proposed research project.

  • Compliance with deadlines and submission of complete documentation — late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Scholarships are full-time, but part-time options may be considered for applicants with significant caring responsibilities or health conditions (note: part-time scholarships are taxable).
