Griffith University Disability Scholars Research Scholarship (GUDSRS) 2025
The Griffith University Disability Scholars Research Scholarship (GUDSRS) is a prestigious opportunity designed to support a commencing candidate of exceptional research potential who has a permanent disability and may have experienced educational disadvantage.
This scholarship aims to provide financial and academic support through a living stipend and an additional research allowance to help recipients pursue a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at Griffith University, one of Australia’s leading institutions recognized for inclusive education and impactful research.
The scholarship supports both domestic and international students, with flexible study options, including part-time and remote study arrangements for eligible domestic candidates.
Scholarship Overview
- Scholarship type: Full stipend and research support allowance
- Stipend value: $34,752 per annum (2025 full-time rate)
- Additional research allowance: Up to $6,000 to support research-related costs associated with a disability
- Leave entitlements: Generous paid recreation, sick, parental, cultural, and partner leave
- Study load: Full-time or part-time (approval required for part-time study)
- Remote options: Domestic candidates may apply to undertake the program predominantly away from the University
- Employment: Flexibility to balance paid employment with study commitments
- Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research (Higher Degree by Research)
- Study Course: Open to all disciplines offered at Griffith University

- Number of positions: Limited
- Duration: Up to 2 years for a Masters by Research degree, and up to 3–4 years for a PhD

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants are expected to:

Have a permanent disability and be registered with Griffith University Student Disability and Accessibility Support Services.

Be commencing a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at Griffith University.
-
Hold at least a Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 8) with an overall grade of Upper Second Class (Class IIA) or equivalent academic qualification.
-
Applicants who do not hold an Honours Class IIA or equivalent must provide a statement of equivalent skills, knowledge, and preparedness to undertake research (refer to Griffith’s Equivalent Qualifications for HDR Admission page).

Not be receiving income from another source that supports living costs exceeding 75% of the GUDSRS stipend rate.
-
Not have completed a degree at the same or higher level as the HDR program they are commencing.
-
Not have previously held an equivalent HDR scholarship unless terminated within six months of commencement or held for a lower-level degree.

Not have held a Commonwealth Government Australia Award scholarship within the last two years, unless approved.
Eligible Countries: All nationalities are eligible, though remote study is available only to domestic candidates.
Eligible Courses or Study Programs: Open to all academic disciplines offered by Griffith University.
Selection Criteria
The selection process is competitive and merit-based. Applications are assessed according to:

Academic merit, particularly performance in qualifications with a substantial research component.

Research potential, demonstrated through publications, prior research experience, and professional background.

Institutional standing of the university where prior qualifications were completed.
-
Compatibility between the applicant’s research interests, the proposed research environment, and supervisory expertise at Griffith University.
-
Alignment of the proposed research project with Griffith’s research priorities.
-
Achievement relative to opportunity, particularly in light of the applicant’s disability and any educational disadvantage.
All applications are ranked according to the University-wide Order of Merit List determined by the HDR Scholarship Committee.

How to Apply
To apply for the GUDSRS, applicants must:

Submit an online admission and scholarship application for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program via the Griffith University website.

Include all required documentation (transcripts, research proposal, references, etc.).
-
Applicants without Honours Class IIA or equivalent must include a statement of equivalency outlining skills and readiness for research study.
-
Applicants may also explain circumstances that have impacted their educational outcomes to support consideration of achievement relative to opportunity.

Provide evidence of a permanent disability either during the scholarship application or upon acceptance of the award.

A copy of registration or confirmation with Griffith University Student Disability and Accessibility Support Services is required.

Applicants are encouraged to complete registration early, as the process may take time.

Applicants can apply a maximum of two times within five years for consideration under this scholarship.
Additional Details
Stipend Payment:
-
The stipend is paid fortnightly into a nominated bank account, starting from the commencement date specified in the offer letter.
-
The stipend is tax-exempt for full-time students, though it remains the recipient’s responsibility to confirm their tax status.
Disability Support:
-
Awardees will receive individualised support and reasonable adjustments from Griffith’s Student Disability and Accessibility Service.

In addition to the general research allowance, recipients receive up to $6,000 (for PhD, pro-rata for Masters) to offset disability-related research expenses.
Leave Entitlements:

Recipients are entitled to paid recreation, sick, parental, cultural, and partner leave during the tenure of the scholarship.

Leave within the first six months of candidature requires approval by the Dean (Research).
Remote and Part-Time Study:
-
Domestic candidates may apply to undertake the program predominantly off-campus, subject to approval.
-
International students must maintain an on-campus enrolment due to visa requirements.
-
Part-time enrolment may be approved under specific circumstances, particularly relating to health or disability needs.
