About the scholarship Opportunity

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences  is currently seeking for PhD candidates with exceptional research potentials to undertake research in the University of Newcastle Australia. The scholarship offer will cover tuition, living cost of the student including other additional financial benefits. Scholarship positions are open to eligible national and international students interested to study in the University of Newcastle. It is a project based scholarship. See details of the project below

Project: Zero-Dimensional Symmetry

Project Summary: The Zero-Dimensional Symmetry project aims to advance knowledge of zero-dimensional symmetry, a frontier in symmetry research, by developing new theoretical and computational tools. In detail, the project aims to advance the understanding of closed vertex-transitive groups acting on trees towards a classification using finite combinatorial structures and an implementation thereof.

Role of the PhD Candidate(s):Expected research directions for interested applicants include:

 the study of k-closed groups acting on trees, the Weiss conjecture, self-similar groups, and the development of computational tools.

  • Scholarship Cover: Full tuition fee
  • Scholarship Value: $28,597 per annum (2021 rate) indexed annually
  • Living cost: Fortnight stipends,
  • Additional benefits:  up to $1,500 relocation allowance, Overseas Student Health Cover(OSHC)
  • Degree Program: PhD by research
  • Field of study:  suitable for Mathematical and Physical  and Engineering Sciences background students
  • Citizen type: International students/ Domestic
  • Scholarship Duration: stipends for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship up to 4  years
  • Application Deadline: 31 August 2021

Eligibility criteria

There are some essential requirements applicants must meet to be eligible for this opportunity. This include the followings  :
  • Masters or First Class Honours in mathematics, 
  • or equivalent Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Demonstrated skills required:
  • Organisational and time management skills,
  • Problem solving ability and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Desirable qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills in (topological) group theory, computational algebra, graph theory and combinatorics.
  • Programming skills

Applicants must also meet the minimum entry requirements to study at the University of Newcastle in order to be eligible for this scholarship position. Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
