While many international students desire to undertake nursing, they are sometimes unable to achieve this dream because they do not have an undergraduate degree in nursing.

Arguably, Australia may be the only country that provides you the opportunity to undertake a nursing master's degree without an undergraduate nursing qualification.

There are a few Australian universities which allow you to undertake a Masters in Nursing regardless of your background and discipline. Here are a few to consider:

1. Master of Nursing - Entry to Practice (Queensland University of Technology)

Course overview:
  • Duration: 2 years 
  • "Masters of Nursing—Entry to Practice is recognised by the Australian College of Nursing as satisfying the academic requirements for admission as a professional member. This course is accredited as a Nursing Pre-registration course with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council / Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia"
  • Entry requirements: If you do not have a nursing background, your completed Bachelor's degree or any higher degree must have been completed within the last 10 years. If your degree was awarded more than 10 years ago, you will need 5 years of professional work experience and submit a CV to support your application.
  • Scholarships: There are scholarships available for both domestic and international students.

2. Master of Nursing Science (University of Melbourne)

Course overview:
  • Duration: 2 years full time
  • Entry requirements: An undergraduate degree from any field that was completed not more than 10 years ago. If the applicant's undergraduate degree is more than 10 years old, professional experience of about 5 years will be required.

3. Master of Nursing Practice (Monash University)

Course overview:
  • Duration: 2 years full time
  • Start date: February & July (first and second semester respectively)
  • "Completion of this course qualifies students to apply for registration as a nurse in Australia. Applicants who are already registered nurses in Australia are not eligible for admission to this course"

  • Admission criteria: "Successful completion of a recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent international qualification in the discipline of health, science, business or law (excluding accounting)."

  • Duration: 2 years full time

  • one 12-credit point unit of study in human anatomy /physiology or a related area from any recognised tertiary institution or equivalent as determined by the Course Coordinator."
