Macquarie University International Road to Research Scholarship 2025-2026
Macquarie University is offering the International Road to Research Scholarship (iR2R) to support exceptional international students who wish to undertake the Master of Research (MRes) program in Sydney, Australia, commencing in Session 1, January 2026.This scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for highly motivated research students to gain world-class training through a structured short-term research program at one of Australia’s leading research institutions.
The opportunity is open exclusively to international students currently residing in Australia and not holding Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
Scholarship Overview
- Scholarship type: Tuition fee offset and stipend
- Stipend value: Living allowance of $39,700 AUD per year (direct payment to student)
- Study Level: Master of Research (MRes)
- Study Course: Open to all study areas
- Citizen type: International students only
- Number of positions: Competitive
- Duration: 1 year (for Year 2 of the MRes)
- Deadline: 31 October 2025 (11:00 PM AEDT)
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

Be an international student (not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident)

Be onshore in Australia at the time of application
-
Intend to live in Sydney during the course of their candidature
-
Plan to commence the Master of Research program in January 2026 (Session 1)

Apply as a full-time student
-
Meet Macquarie University’s English language requirements
-
Satisfy academic and admission criteria for the MRes
-
Provide evidence of supervision from a Macquarie University researcher (compulsory for FMHHS applicants)
Applicants must not:
-
Be enrolled in any current Macquarie graduate research program
-
Have previously completed a research degree at the same or higher level
-
Receive another major scholarship, award, or salary
-
Submit an incomplete or misleading application
-
Intend to commence in Session 2 2026 (deferrals not permitted)
Selection Criteria
Selection is merit-based and considers:
-
Academic performance: Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or Grade Point Average (GPA)
-
Comparability of overseas qualifications to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
-
Confirmation of academic supervision
-
Fulfillment of all application and admission requirements
-
Alignment of research interest with Macquarie research priorities
Applicants who submit complete and competitive applications by the deadline will be ranked, and scholarships will be awarded to top-performing candidates.

How to Apply
Applications for a January 2026 commencement (Session 1) must be submitted online by 31 October 2025 (11:00 PM AEDT).
We recommend submitting your application early to avoid technical issues or incomplete submissions.
Outcomes will be communicated by mid-December 2025. If you do not receive notification by 15 December 2025, please consider your application unsuccessful.
