Swinburne Research Stipend Scholarships 2025-2026

This scholarship opportunity is sponsored by Swinburne University of Technology in partnership with the Australian Government to support high-achieving research students in pursuing doctoral-level studies in Australia.

The Swinburne Research Stipend Scholarships are designed to assist with general living costs for candidates undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Professional Doctorate. This opportunity is open to both domestic and international students, and successful applicants are also automatically awarded tuition fee coverage through either a RTP Fees-Offset (for domestic students) or a Tuition Fee Scholarship (for international students).

There are two main scholarships under this scheme:

  • Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award (SUPRA)

  • Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship (RTPS)

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover

  • Stipend value: Annual living allowance of $34,700 (indexed, 2025 rate) for up to 3 years, with a possible 6-month extension

  • Other supports:

    • Relocation allowance

    • Paid leave of absence

    • Thesis allowance

  • Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students

  • Study Level: PhD or Professional Doctorate

  • Study Course: Open to all research-eligible programs

  • Citizen type: Domestic and International students

  • Number of positions: Limited, varies per round

  • Duration: 3 years with possible 6-month extension for stipend; tuition covered for up to 4 years

  • Deadline:

    • Round 1: Opens 31 March 2025 | Closes 9 May 2025

    • Round 2: Opens 25 August 2025 | Closes 6 October 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants are expected to:

  • Meet Swinburne’s entry requirements for a PhD or Professional Doctorate

  • Hold a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours or equivalent

  • Propose a research project that aligns with Swinburne’s Research Strategy and Ecosystem

  • Not be receiving another income greater than 75% of the RTPS stipend that supports general living expenses

Applicants must also meet one of the following conditions:

  • Be applying for entry into a Swinburne PhD or Professional Doctorate

  • Be currently enrolled in a Swinburne PhD/Professional Doctorate for less than 2 years at the application deadline

  • Have received a Swinburne offer of candidature but not yet enrolled

Eligible Countries: All nationalities
Eligible course or study program: Any research program leading to a PhD or Professional Doctorate

Selection Criteria 

Scholarships will be awarded based on a competitive assessment considering:

  • Eligibility and entry requirements

  • Strength and relevance of the research proposal

  • Alignment with Swinburne’s research strategy

  • Previous academic achievement

  • Research and publication experience

  • Quality of the supervisory team

  • Referee reports

  • Relevant work experience and achievements

How to Apply

Swinburne Research Scholarships are awarded during two rounds each year.

 Application Rounds:

  • Round 1:

    • Opens: Monday 31 March 2025, 9:00 AM AEDT

    • Closes: Friday 9 May 2025 AEST

    • Outcome Notification: Wednesday 9 July 2025

    • Enrolment (Domestic): By 31 October 2025

    • Enrolment (International): By 30 January 2026

  • Round 2:

    • Opens: Monday 25 August 2025, 9:00 AM AEST

    • Closes: Monday 6 October 2025 AEDT

    • Outcome Notification: Wednesday 3 December 2025

    • Enrolment (Domestic): By 27 February 2026

    • Enrolment (International): By 29 May 2026

 Application Steps:

For prospective students:

  1. Follow the HDR application process.

  2. Select “Swinburne Research Scholarships” when asked about scholarship type.

  3. Attach required documents:

    • Completed HDR Research Proposal template (signed by supervisor)

    • Academic transcripts

    • Resume

    • Proof of citizenship

    • Evidence of publications or prior research

For current Swinburne PhD students:

  1. Complete the 2025 Swinburne Research Scholarship Current Student Application Form

  2. Include:

    • HDR Research Proposal signed by supervisor

    • Updated Resume including list of publications

All applicants:

  • Arrange for at least two referees to submit referee reports to:  HDRscholarships@swin.edu.au

  • Ensure all applications and referee reports are submitted before the round deadline.

  • Incomplete applications may not be considered.
