University of Wollongong Australia University Postgraduate Award (UPA) 2026

This scholarship opportunity is being sponsored by the University of Wollongong (UOW) to support outstanding research students from both Australia and around the world to pursue higher degrees by research at one of Australia’s top-ranked research-intensive universities.

The opportunity is therefore open to domestic and international students to undertake a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctoral (PhD) program across a broad range of disciplines at UOW. See some application tips at the end of the post

Scholarship Overview

Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover (through separate RTP/University provisions)
Stipend value: Living allowance of AUD $35,522 per year (2025 rate, tax-free and indexed annually).
Other supports: Access to state-of-the-art research facilities, expert supervision, and professional development resources.
Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students (varies by offer).
Study Level: Masters (MPhil) / PhD by Research
Study Course: Open to all study areas offered at UOW
Citizen type: Domestic and International students
Number of positions: Varies by faculty and funding availability
Duration: Up to 2 years for MPhil; up to 3.5 years for PhD

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants are expected to:

Be a domestic or international student
Be commencing or currently enrolled in a PhD or MPhil at the University of Wollongong
Meet the University’s admission and English language requirements
Have strong academic performance in relevant previous studies
Submit a complete and competitive research proposal
Not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship offering similar benefits

Eligible Countries: All nationalities are eligible
Eligible Course or Study Program: All HDR programs offered across UOW faculties

Selection Criteria

The selection for this scholarship will be competitive and based on:

Academic excellence and previous qualifications (e.g., GPA, class rank)
Research potential and originality of the proposal
Relevance of proposed research to UOW’s areas of strength
Prior research experience or achievements (e.g., publications, awards)
Professional or industry experience related to the research area
Strong letters of recommendation from academic referees
