La Trobe University Dennis McDermott Research Scholarships 2025

La Trobe University offers the Dennis McDermott Research Scholarships to support outstanding Australian and Australian Permanent Resident students pursuing a research-based Masters or PhD. These scholarships provide financial support in conjunction with a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship to enable students to focus on high-quality research and develop their professional skills.

Applicants may undertake research on any topic, either by developing their own research proposal or through available Graduate Research projects, subject to supervision and resource availability.

 Scholarship Overview

• Scholarship type: RTP Scholarship with top-up

• Stipend value: $34,000 per annum (RTP) + $10,000 per annum top-up (2025 rate)

• Other supports:

  • Research support grant of up to $3,000 per year to cover laboratory consumables, fieldwork, and conference attendance

  • RTP Fees Offset covering tuition fees (up to 4 years for PhD, 2 years for Masters by research)

  • RTP Allowance for relocation and thesis production

  • Opportunities to collaborate with La Trobe’s researchers and access professional development programs

• Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research

• Study Course: Open to all research areas

• Citizen type: Australian citizens or Australian Permanent Residents

• Number of positions: Not specified

• Duration: Up to 3.5 years for PhD, 22 months for Masters by research

• Deadline: 31 December 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must:

• Meet entrance requirements for the proposed course

• Not be receiving another scholarship greater than 75% of the stipend rate for the same purpose

• Be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident

• Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin

Preferred candidates:

• Will undertake their research at a La Trobe University campus

• For PhD: Have completed a Masters by Research or equivalent significant research with outcomes such as a thesis or peer-reviewed publication, assessed at La Trobe standard of 75 or above

• For Masters by Research: Have achieved a first-class honours degree at an Australian university or equivalent from a recognized overseas institution

Selection Criteria 

Selection is merit-based, considering:

• Academic achievements and research potential

• Relevance of proposed research to prior study or professional experience

• Research outputs, including publications or prior thesis work

• Endorsements or recommendations from academic supervisors

• Quality and feasibility of the research proposal

How to Apply

1. Review details on how to apply for candidature.

2. Develop a research proposal or select a Graduate Research project (where available).

3. Identify a suitable supervisor via the La Trobe University website and contact them for endorsement.

4. After receiving in-principle agreement for supervision:

   • Complete your application, selecting the scholarship “Graduate Research - Specialist Research Scholarship”

   • Submit the application for consideration.

5. Current La Trobe graduate research students must start a new application and select “Graduate Research - Scholarship Only” to apply for the scholarship.
