University of Melbourne Human Rights Scholarship 2025

This fully funded scholarship, sponsored by the University of Melbourne, supports outstanding research students from both Australia and internationally who are committed to advancing human rights through academic research.

The opportunity is open to domestic and international students who wish to pursue a Master’s or PhD by research in the field of Human Rights at one of Australia’s leading research universities. See application tips and how to apply at the end of this post

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover

  • Stipend value: Living allowance of $43,500 per year pro-rata (2025 full-time study rate). The allowance includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave and may be indexed annually.

  • Other supports:

    • Relocation allowance of $2,000 for students moving from other Australian states or territories

    • $3,000 for students relocating from outside Australia

  • Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students

  • Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research

  • Study Course: Research in the field of Human Rights

  • Citizen type: Domestic and International students

  • Number of positions: Not specified

  • Duration: Up to 2 years for Masters by Research; up to 3.5 years for Doctoral degree

  • Deadline: 31 October 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master’s or Doctorate by research at the University of Melbourne, with commencement in the year of award

  • Intend to conduct graduate research in the field of Human Rights

  • Not have completed a research qualification at the same or higher level than the course for which the scholarship is sought

  • Not have previously received a graduate research scholarship

Selection Criteria 

Applicants are selected based on academic excellence and their demonstrated commitment to Human Rights. The committee will consider:

  • Academic merit from prior studies (scores, rankings, etc.)

  • The area of study and its relevance to human rights

  • Commitment to human rights demonstrated through voluntary or professional work

  • A clear explanation of how the proposed research contributes to the understanding and advancement of human rights

  • Strength of the research proposal and supporting documentation

  2. Submit an online application for a graduate research program (Master or PhD) in Human Rights

  3. Complete the separate scholarship application by selecting “Human Rights Scholarship” in the funding section

  4. In your application, detail your commitment to advancing human rights beyond academic study, such as through volunteer work, community service, or professional experience

  5. Explain how your research will contribute to the field of human rights

  6. Await notification by February 2026. Note: Individual feedback is not provided for unsuccessful applications
