Griffith University RTP International Fee Offset Scholarships 2025

The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) International Fee Offset Scholarships are offered by Griffith University as part of the Commonwealth Government's initiative to support world-class research training. These scholarships aim to remove the financial barrier of tuition fees for talented international students commencing or currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program (Master’s by Research or PhD).

The RTP International Fee Offset Scholarships are awarded on a highly competitive basis to international candidates who have demonstrated outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates who are successful in securing this scholarship will benefit from tuition fee relief, overseas health insurance, and student services fee coverage allowing them to focus fully on their research journey at one of Australia's top research institutions.

 Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship Type: Full tuition fee offset

  • Stipend Value: Not included in this scholarship. Candidates must have separate financial sponsorship (e.g. minimum $AUD35,000 pa) or pair this with a GUIPRS to receive a living allowance.

  • Other Supports:

    • Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF): Fully covered during scholarship tenure

    • Relocation Costs: Not covered under this scheme

  • Health Insurance: Full Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Policy  up to 57 months for PhD candidates

  • Study Level: Master’s by Research / PhD

  • Study Course: Open to all research study areas

  • Citizen Type: International students only (non-Australian/NZ)

  • Number of Positions: Not fixed; determined by merit and fund availability

  • Duration:

    • Up to 2 years for Master’s by Research

    • Up to 3.5 years for PhD candidates

  • Deadline: 26 August 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be an international student, not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen

  • Be commencing or currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at Griffith University

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree with First-Class Honours (AQF Level 8), or equivalent qualification as per Griffith’s HDR entry standards

  • Not have previously completed a degree at the same or higher level as the HDR program

  • Have not completed more than 12 months of HDR candidature at Griffith or elsewhere if seeking credit

  • Not have previously held the same or equivalent scholarship, unless terminated early or awarded for a lower-level degree

  • Not have received a Commonwealth Government Australia Award scholarship in the last 2 years (exceptions require DFAT approval)

  • Not currently be receiving another scholarship covering HDR tuition fees

Selection Criteria 

Applications are evaluated on a merit-based and competitive selection process, taking into account:

  • Academic Excellence

    • Focus on results in the most recent qualification with a significant research component

    • Consideration of results in other relevant qualifications

  • Research Performance & Potential

    • Evidence of research skills through published works, presentations, or outputs

    • Sustained research experience and how it supports future research capacity

  • Research Environment & Supervision Fit

    • Alignment between applicant and proposed supervisor(s) and research program

    • Relevance of the proposed research to Griffith’s research strengths

  • Institutional Prestige

    • The standing of the institution where previous research training was completed

Applications are ranked and assessed by the University HDR Scholarship Committee using a University-wide Order of Merit.

How to Apply

  1. Apply for Admission + Scholarship
    All applicants must submit an online application for admission into a Griffith research degree via the HDR portal, which includes a scholarship application section:

  2. GUIPRS Pairing (Optional)
    Candidates with external sponsorships (minimum A$35,000 per annum) may also apply for a Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUIPRS) to receive a living stipend.

  3. Apply Early
    Applications are accepted year-round, but assessment deadlines for each scholarship round may vary. Refer to Griffith’s Continuous Scholarship Round timelines.

  4. Limit:
    You may only apply twice in a 5-year period for consideration in the HDR scholarship selection process.
