Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS) 2025
The Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) is a prestigious and fully funded opportunity offered by the University of Melbourne to support high-achieving domestic and international students undertaking graduate research programs (Masters by Research or PhD).
The scholarship is designed to recognize academic excellence and research potential, helping outstanding students pursue world-class research in one of Australia’s top-ranked universities. No separate application is required eligible applicants are automatically considered upon applying for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne
Scholarship Overview
- Scholarship type: Fully funded (tuition + stipend)
- Stipend value: $38,500 per year (2025 full-time study rate), paid fortnightly
- Other supports:
- Relocation allowance of $2,000 for students moving from other Australian states or territories, or $3,000 for those relocating from overseas
- Limited paid sick, parental, and partner leave
- Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students requiring a student visa
- Study level: Masters by Research / Doctoral (PhD)
- Study course: Open to all fields of study
- Citizen type: Domestic and International students
- Number of positions: Approximately 350
- Duration:
- Up to 2 years for Masters by Research
- Up to 3.5–4 years for PhD
- Total value: 100% fee remission and benefits valued up to $135,000
- Deadline: Open for automatic consideration
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Melbourne Research Scholarship, applicants must:

Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
-
Be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
Eligible Countries: Open to all nationalities
Eligible Programs: Any graduate research program (Masters or PhD) offered by the University of Melbourne
Selection Criteria
Selection is highly competitive and merit-based. Applicants are ranked according to:

Academic excellence in previous studies

Research potential demonstrated in their field of interest

Relevance of prior studies and professional experience to the proposed research

Published works, refereed papers, or other research outputs

Referee recommendations and academic references

Special achievements such as original compositions, medical qualifications, or equivalent research accomplishments
How to Apply
No separate scholarship application is required. Follow these steps:

Apply for a graduate research course at the University of Melbourne by the course application deadline.

Within seven days of submitting your course application, you will automatically be considered for the Melbourne Research Scholarship and other eligible graduate research scholarships.

If you already have a course offer and have deferred your commencement or are currently enrolled in a research course, you must submit an online scholarship application form through the University’s scholarship portal.
When will you know the outcome?

Domestic students receive an offer for the Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) as part of their course offer.

International students and those eligible for stipends will receive separate scholarship offers around the same time as course offers are issued.
