Flinders University Overseas Travelling Fellowship 2026 

This prestigious fellowship opportunity is being sponsored by Flinders University to support outstanding higher degree research students in enhancing their doctoral research through international academic exposure. The Overseas Travelling Fellowship is the most distinguished award offered by the University to PhD candidates and is designed to promote academic excellence and global collaboration.

The fellowship enables full-time or part-time PhD students who have demonstrated exceptional aptitude for independent research to undertake short periods of advanced study or research at approved universities or research institutions outside Australia. The overseas experience must clearly benefit the student’s thesis and contribute positively to the University’s research profile. Recipients are expected to serve as exemplary ambassadors of Flinders University during their fellowship period.

Fellowship Overview 

• Scholarship type: Travel fellowship
• Airfare support: Economy class return-trip airfare with student concession plus taxes
• Insurance: Travel insurance (arranged through the University)
• Additional support: Possible BankSA Travelling Award of $625.00 (subject to approval by the University Scholarships Committee)
• Study Level: PhD
• Study Course: Open to all research areas (subject to relevance to thesis)
• Citizen type: Domestic and International students
• Number of positions: No more than two awards per year
• Duration: Maximum of 6 months
• Deadline: 8 May 2026

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants are expected to:

• Have been enrolled in a PhD program at Flinders University for at least 18 months (or equivalent part-time) at the time of departure;
• Have clearly demonstrated outstanding aptitude for independent research;
• Have obtained unqualified support from their supervisor for the proposed overseas visit;
• Have secured approval from the overseas institution confirming acceptance for the proposed period of study.

Eligible Countries: All nationalities are eligible for this fellowship
Eligible course or study program: Any PhD research program at Flinders University, provided the overseas visit directly benefits the candidate’s thesis

Selection Criteria

The fellowship will be awarded by the Higher Degree by Research Scholarships Committee based on:

• Demonstrated research excellence and academic merit
• Strength and relevance of the proposed overseas research activity
• Evidence that the visit will significantly enhance the thesis and benefit the University
• Supervisor’s endorsement
• Financial resources available to the applicant
