About the positions

Melanoma Early Detection - 3 PhD positions available, University of Queensland

This Earmarked Scholarship project is aligned with the recently launched awarded Category 1 research grant. It offers the eligible candidate the opportunity to work with leading researchers and contribute to large projects of national significance.

Up to three full-time PhD opportunities are available focusing on melanoma early detection in the following areas: artificial intelligence, statistics and public health.

The PhD scholarships are available for exceptional students to complete a PhD as part of a National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) in Skin Imaging and Precision Diagnosis. The aim of this CRE is to identify how innovative 3D total-body imaging technologies can be integrated into the healthcare pathway to improve melanoma early detection and ultimately reduce the health and economic burden caused by melanoma skin cancer.

PhD students 1 and 2 will focus on the novel field of dermatology image analysis and biostatistics, and each derives their own program of research in this area.

A third PhD student opportunity is available in the field of public health assessing the use of consumer technologies for melanoma screening. The objective of this PhD is to improve the confidence, willingness and trust of people to engage in melanoma skin self-examination practices.  More details about these projects are found on the project page. Scholarship Overview

  • Stipends: $32,192 per annum tax-free (2023 rate), indexed annually

Selection Criteria 

The successful applicants will be selected on a competitive basis. The Preferred educational background considered for these positions includes the following: 
  • previous academic record
  • publication record
  • honours and awards
  • employment history.

The applicant/s will demonstrate academic achievement in either the field/s of public health, statistics or artificial intelligence and the potential for scholastic success.

The successful applicants will work as part of the CHSR and Dermatology Research Centre teams at UQ, as well as collaborate with researchers from the University of Sydney and Monash University. The large multi-disciplinary team includes dermatologists, behavioural psychologists, health economists, epidemiologists, and AI, computer and data scientists who are working together to improve melanoma early detection in Australia.

How to apply

Before applying for these scholarships, applicants must check the latest commencement date and ensure they can meet the timeframes. If you are a successful candidate, you must commence by Research Quarter 4, 2024. You should apply at least 3 months prior to the research quarter commencement date.

Earmarked scholarships are awarded to support Category 1 project grants. To apply for this scholarship, interested applicants should  follow the steps below:

  2. Get your documents ready. Prepare your documentation
  3. Apply. In your application, under the 'Scholarship and Collaborative study' section, select:
  • ‘My higher degree is not collaborative’.
  • 'I am applying for, or have been awarded a scholarship or sponsorship'.
